Description
Brief info about writing resume and CV
- Your resume doesn't need to be fancy unless you're a designer. If you're not, a black-and-white resume is okay.
- Picture: If you think you're good-looking, go ahead. If not, skip it to avoid bias, or skip it at all.
- Basic info: Address, Contact No, Email, LinkedIn link.
- Language: Don't use graphic bars or 🟢🟢🟢🟢🟢, state basic/intermediate/advanced.
- Technical Skills: Same, no graphic bars, just basic/intermediate/advanced.
- Soft Skills: Copy-paste the soft skills from job ads. For example, if the job ad mentions leadership, include it in your resume and other necessary soft skills.
- Professional Summary : Just 1-2 lines, align it with company's mission and vision, but rephrase the sentence.
- Education: If your KCSE mean grade is below B+ and you have gone to college/university, DON'T INCLUDE.
- Experiences: If you don't have work or internship experience, you can include projects you did during your studies. Try to include only relevant experiences. And if you worked for only 1 or 2 months, don't bother unless it was project-based.
- Achievements and Co-Curricular Involvement: Include only relevant ones.
- References: Make sure to inform the person. And make sure they know you, especially lecturers because they have many students.
- Keep your resume to 1-2 pages max. If you have extensive experience, you can switch to a CV format with up to 5-7 pages.
- Include ONLY important/relevant information. Don't waste space and don't leave big gaps between sections.
- Once you've fixed your resume, you can check if it's ATS friendly or not, because nowadays many employers filter using the ATS system.
Please take this really seriously.
