THEATRE NURSE

Job Purpose: The Theatre Nurse plays a critical role in the delivery of safe, efficient, and high-quality surgical care. Responsible for preparing the operating room, assisting during surgeries, and providing pre and post-operative care to patients, the Theatre Nurse ensures adherence to surgical protocols and works collaboratively with the surgical team.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Pre-Operative Duties:
- Prepare the operating room with necessary equipment, instruments, and sterile supplies.
- Conduct patient assessments and confirm surgical consent and documentation.
- Ensure all safety checks are performed according to Surgical Safety Checklist.

Intra-Operative Duties:
- Assist the surgeon during procedures (as a Scrub or Circulating Nurse).
- Maintain sterile technique and monitor aseptic conditions throughout the surgery.
- Handle instruments, sutures, and other materials safely and efficiently.
- Accurately count instruments, sponges, and needles before and after procedures.

Post-Operative Duties:
- Assist in patient recovery and transfer to the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU).
- Provide post-operative assessments and monitor for complications.
- Complete surgical documentation and incident reports if required.

Supportive and Administrative Activities:
- Participating in theatre audits and quality improvement initiatives.
- Reporting timely malfunctioning equipment or breakages.
- Assisting with stock-taking and ordering of theatre supplies.
- Ensuring adherence to Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) protocols.
- Participating in clinical meetings and Continuous Medical Education (CME).
- Mentoring and guiding student nurses or new staff.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements:
Qualifications
- Diploma or Degree in Nursing from a recognized institution.
- Registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) and holder of a valid practicing license.
- Post-basic training in Perioperative/Theatre Nursing is an added advantage.
- Minimum 1–2 years of working experience in a hospital theatre/surgical department.
- Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is desirable.

Experience/Skills
- Excellent knowledge of surgical instruments and aseptic procedures.
- Good interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills.
- High level of integrity and commitment to patient care.
- Ability to work under pressure and handle emergency situations calmly.
- Attention to detail and good record-keeping abilities.

Working Conditions:
- Shift work including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and on-call rotations.
- Physically demanding – standing for long periods, lifting equipment or patients.
- Possible exposure to infectious materials, sharp instruments, and bodily fluids.
